The new year is just around the corner, and with it comes the search for New Year's resolutions once again. Because we can't start 2026 without good resolutions for the new year, can we? Eating healthier, reading more, or exercising regularly – what's on your list this year?
If you still need inspiration or want to find out how to really stick to your resolutions this time, you've come to the right place. Make yourself a warm cup of tea, get comfortable, and find out everything you need to know to get the new year off to a good start!
Why New Year's resolutions often don't work
We all know the gym membership that gets taken out with excessive enthusiasm in January and then never used again, right? Why is that?
Many New Year's resolutions don't fail because we lack discipline, but because of how we approach them. On January 1, we often start overly motivated, want to change everything at once, and set ourselves huge goals that feel completely overwhelming after just a few days. On top of that, we often phrase resolutions too vaguely – “live healthier,” “exercise more,” “less stress.” But what exactly does that mean in everyday life? Without concrete steps, a good resolution quickly becomes a nice wish that simply gets lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life. We quickly fall back into old routines because they are familiar and convenient. And it takes a little while for resolutions to become routines.
But that doesn't mean New Year's resolutions can't work – they just need more structure, realistic expectations, and a little patience with ourselves.
... and how you can still manage to stick to your New Year's resolutions
We have some tips for you on how to stick to your New Year's resolutions – step by step.
-
Reflect on your year
What was good, what did you miss, or what would you have wished for? In which areas are you already satisfied with yourself and your life, and where would you like to change something in 2026? Write down all your thoughts. -
Set goals
New Year's resolutions often fail because they are set more or less arbitrarily, and people simply choose whatever sounds good. However, you can only achieve your New Year's resolutions and maintain them in the long term if they align with your goals and help you turn your wishes & dreams into reality. Then you know exactly what you are working toward. So set yourself a few goals for the new year. They can be something small or a larger project, such as living a healthier lifestyle. -
Prioritize your goals and break them down into smaller goals
If you’ve written down 5 goals or more, you can now take a look at which points are genuinely important to you. If you take on too much and essentially want to completely overhaul your entire life (including yourself) from one day to the next, you’re setting yourself up for failure. It’s better to choose a few important goals that you’re happy to work toward. If your goals are big, feel free to break them down into smaller goals; otherwise, you can quickly feel overwhelmed and give up because you don’t know where to start. For example, you can break down living more healthily into eating healthier, exercising more, getting enough sleep, etc. -
Define your goals clearly and decide how you want to put them into practice
Write down your goals and decide what they mean to you. What exactly do they involve for you, and how can you put them into practice? Essentially, write yourself a to-do list or, to put it more motivatingly, a list of sources of inspiration. For example, go to the gym 2 times a week instead of simply exercising more. This way, whenever you’re feeling a bit directionless, you can always see exactly what you could still do for your goals today. -
Grow step by step
It’s very important not to take on too much. Reading for 1 hour a day, cooking 3 healthy meals a day, and going to the gym for 1 hour every day is often simply too much. Start gradually and try going to the gym 2 times a week and cooking 1 genuinely healthy meal a day, for example. Over time, you can easily increase your efforts and adjust your goals. -
Now it’s time to put it into practice
Just get started! Don’t think about it too much, and switch off your mind sometimes too - the one that supplies you with 1,000 excuses. Of course, you’re allowed (and should!) take a break sometimes and not push yourself every day just to achieve your goals. But if you notice that the days when you look for excuses are becoming more frequent, it may be time to take action. ;) Keep reminding yourself why you’re doing it. Soon, your new habits will become routine, and it will get easier. -
Dealing with setbacks and lack of motivation
It’s completely normal to fall into a motivational slump after a few days or weeks. When that happens, feel free to seek help from friends and family who support you. Celebrate your smaller and larger successes, and reward yourself when you pull yourself together and work on your resolutions. At the same time, accept that sometimes things simply don’t work out for a day. -
Keep going and keep the bigger picture in mind
Giving 50% every day is better than giving 110% for two weeks and then not managing anything else for the rest of the year. Slow, sustainable progress is (almost) always better than starting things in a burst of enthusiasm that you can’t maintain.
For perspective: Going to the gym twice a week gives you more than 100 training sessions a year, while eating one apple a week adds up to more than 50 apples a year. And reading for 15 minutes a day adds up to 10 books a year.
Our tip: Habit trackers
What helps me especially to really stick to my resolutions and build sustainable routines are habit trackers. Habit trackers can support you in bringing new - good - habits into your everyday life or finally getting rid of unwanted habits.
These trackers come in many different forms: old-school on paper, as habit tracker apps, or as digital habit trackers like Vetain’s. Regardless of what the trackers look like, they are all structured similarly: There is usually a table or some kind of calendar where you can enter new habits, meaning routines or goals, yourself. You can then tick a box or color in a square each day when you have completed the task. Tracking habits makes it easier for many people to stick with them over the long term and establish real routines. Vetain’s habit tracker also automatically calculates your progress and gives you an overview of how your month is going so far - including which habits you’re completing and how consistently. This automatically gives you a motivational boost and makes you more likely to stick with it.
I love habit trackers and can’t imagine my 2026 New Year’s resolutions without one!

Are New Year's resolutions nonsense?
New Year, New Me - sensible or not? More and more often, people say that resolutions are nonsense. This is often accompanied by the question: How long do New Year's resolutions last? Admittedly, they often last only a few days or weeks. But that doesn't mean the tradition is nonsense. It simply shows that the way someone tries to put their resolutions into practice isn't perfect yet. Because if you don't approach the whole thing properly, you simply can't stick with it. But we believe that taking the time to focus on yourself, reflect, and improve yourself and your life is truly powerful and incredibly important.
This doesn't necessarily have to happen at New Year's, of course. For many people, however, the clear end of one year and the fresh start of a new one are a welcome invitation to start over. I also think that a new year brings an incredible amount of potential and motivation. But you can just as well start making and implementing good resolutions in November or on a Tuesday afternoon. Because good habits are always good, whether at the beginning of the year or when summer is just around the corner.
