What originally began as a crazy idea between two friends is now a Food Startup with big plans. Here you can learn about the somewhat different founding story of Vetain.
The Origin
It all began during the summer holidays of 2019, shortly before graduating from high school. At that time, we were at the gym very often and did not really think about sustainable nutrition.
The more we explored the subject of training, the clearer it became to us how important good nutrition is. After watching several documentaries and reading various reports, we realized that our routine post-workout shake (consisting of 30g of whey and half a liter of milk) might not be the best choice after all.
We delved deeper and deeper into the subject and were shocked. Dozens of tons of whey are produced every day in the cheapest way possible. You can imagine that the milk used for it does not necessarily come from the happiest cows!
We had to radically change our attitude and, above all, our diet. We no longer wanted to be partly responsible for the exploitation of animals. And we were also tired of constantly feeling full and no longer wanted to accept the feeling that whey did not agree with us - both for our skin and our general well-being.
The Revelation Never Came
So we set out in search of vegan alternatives. The result? Pure disappointment.
The vegan proteins we ordered were all terrible. They tasted artificially sweet, were difficult to mix and left a gritty mouthfeel. Coincidence? Hardly. At the time, we really tested almost every vegan protein that was known on the market - Always with the same result!
Ultimately, we were so disappointed that at some point we simply said: "Why don't we just make our own protein that actually tastes good? It can't be that difficult!"
By the way, back then we wanted to make the protein just for ourselves. The idea of selling the protein online only came much later.
"We Can Do Better"
We said it, and we did it. A few weeks later, we held our first prototype in our hands. Without a registered business and without any experience in product development. And lo and behold, our first prototype was good. It was not spectacular, but it was good. Not too sweet, easy to dissolve and with a pleasant taste.
Over the following year and a half, we tried more than 400 additional raw materials, consulted with a laboratory, sports physicians, nutritionists and contract manufacturers, and developed our Vegan Protein from the best ingredients until we were truly 100% satisfied with the taste and quality.
All that was missing was the money needed for the first production run.
So, in March 2021, we launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and raised more than €16,000 for our idea within three weeks.
The rest is history.
